Midday police shooting shocks witnesses in Kelowna

At least one man was injured following a shooting outside a bank located on a mall parking lot in Kelowna on Wednesday. According to the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., a police officer was involved in the incident – Jan 24, 2019

UPDATE 6:45 P.M.

RCMP confirm officers fired on a suspect and injured him on Wednesday afternoon in Kelowna.

But police have not said why the suspect was being arrested.

“Just after 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, January 23, Plain Clothes Kelowna RCMP officers and officers from the Southeast District Emergency Response Team attempted to conduct the arrest of man known to police near Cooper Road and Harvey Avenue in Kelowna. Shots were fired by police,” RCMP said in an email to media.

The suspect was transported to Kelowna General Hospital where he is being treated for undetermined injuries.

While the incident took place in front of the Kelowna CIBC bank building at Orchard Park Mall, the bank was not involved in the police matter, the release said.

Kelowna RCMP are investigating the incidents that led to the need for the arrest while the Independent Investigations Office in B.C. is looking into the shooting.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Police vehicles and yellow tape surrounded a bank near Orchard Park Shopping Centre in Kelowna on Wednesday afternoon.

It’s believed a person was shot outside the CIBC branch, which is located on the mall’s parking lot. One witness, Jackie Marsh, told Global News she heard “a bang and a lot of commotion” outside the bank.

Marsh also said there was blood over the parking lot and debris over a car. Overall, she called it a “pretty freaky incident.”

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. said in a tweet that an officer was involved in the shooting, and that investigators will be arriving in Kelowna later this evening.
