Man dies in Marlborough Park fire; home had no working smoke alarms: CFD

A man is dead following a house fire in Calgary’s Marlborough Park community.

Calgary fire said they were called to reports of a house fire in the 600-block of Maidstone Drive N.E. at around 1:25 a.m. on Monday.

“Firefighters quickly initiated an interior fire attack and search, and were able to knock down and control the main body of fire,” a news release said on Monday.

When fire crews entered the home, a 71-year-old man was found and crews began CPR immediately, the fire department said.

Land title documents identified the homeowner as Robert Mitchell. Neighbours said they knew him as “Bob.”

According to fire officials, EMS continued to treat the man, but he later died of his injuries.

A cat also died in the blaze, they said.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the Calgary Fire Department said it is believed the blaze started in the living room. There were no working smoke alarms in the home.
