Ontario’s police watchdog investigating officer-involved shooting in Smithville

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into the circumstances surrounding a police-involved shooting in Smithville, Ont., located just east of Hamilton.

The SIU said in a statement that Niagara Regional Police officers were called to an Anastasia Boulevard home at around 12:30 p.m. Friday with reports that two people were tied up in the basement.

After arriving, the statement said, a 46-year-old man who officers considered to be a person of interest ran away. The man was found at Anastasia Boulevard and Harvest Gate, where there was an interaction.

The SIU said an officer shot the man multiple times. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said two women were taken to hospital with critical injuries.

Officers said there is no ongoing threat to public safety. No officers were injured.

On Saturday, Niagara Regional Police issued an update, saying Alexander Jason Bates, 46, of Mississauga has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Police add that he remains in hospital and further charges against him are anticipated.

Both victims also remain in hospital and are listed in stable condition, and their names are not being released while the investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday, Peel Regional Police confirmed that this incident is linked to a homicide that occurred in Mississauga earlier in the day on Friday.

Around 9:50 a.m., an 83-year-old woman was found dead in a home near Dundas Street East and Cawthra Road.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.
