Wine gaining popularity among Saskatchewanians

REGINA – Last year, the average Saskatchewanian spent $703.50 on booze, compared to the national average of $724 per person. According to a recent report by Statistics Canada,  that’s over 100 litres per person.

“[It] doesn’t really surprise me. $700 sounds like a lot of money but when you divide it up in a year into 365 days,” said SLGA customer Bob Sillinger.

“A person has a bottle of wine once a week with Sunday dinner, goes out for a meal with friends, they’re going to spend that kind of money. I don’t think that’s out of line,” said Rob Jardine, who was also shopping for wine.

In 2012, beer sales in Saskatchewan went up 3.1 per cent while wine sales increased by 14 per cent.

“Specifically we’re seeing that customers are buying more premium products, they’re buying better products, so they’re not necessarily purchasing more, but they’re purchasing better,” said David Morris, spokesperson for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA).

“There’s more home entertaining, there’s more shows about wine and wine and food pairing. It’s kind of become a trendy thing,” said Morris.
