It’s been a meeting place for centuries in Winnipeg and now the landscape at The Forks set to evolve even more.
The City and the Forks Renewal Corporation are collaborating to develop nearly 12 acres of land currently used as surface parking lots.
Consultations are underway to find out what should take shape on the land. Public input will also be taken into consideration.
The process is expected to take a year with development getting underway within three years.

Jim August, the chief executive officer of the Forks North Portage, doesn’t want to speculate what might be built on the land but would like to see a mixed use development with plenty of green space to fit with the rest of the property.
“It’s a challenging site right up against the rail line,” he said.

August told Global News a parking structure of some kind would need to be incorporated.
Parcel 4 will also be included in the plans. At one point the city owned property was slated for a waterpark and hotel complex. The controversial development never materialized.
The city and The Forks are splitting the $150,000 price tag for consultations.
August said it is too soon to know a cost for the future development but it will involve funding from both the public and private sector.
