Stormy forecast prompts closures and cancellations in N.S.

WATCH ABOVE: An early snowstorm continues to sweep across Atlantic Canada. Its impact on the Maritimes is a little surprising, considering how familiar the region is with winter weather. Ross Lord reports – Nov 16, 2018

A number of schools across the Maritimes are closed, flights have been grounded and travel is treacherous as a wintry storm bears down on the region today.

Environment Canadaissued warnings and statements for Nova Scotia, in addition to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Snow is also expected across Nova Scotia and P.E.I., with as much as 20 centimetres expected on higher terrain such as the Cobequid Pass and the Cape Breton Highlands

As of early Friday morning, cancellations and closures are beginning to roll in.

NSCC (Truro, Pictou and Amherst campuses), Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education schools and South Shore Regional Centre for Education schools are closed.

Strait Regional Centre for Education schools will have an early dismissal.

Schools in the Halifax Regional Centre for Education are scheduled to open, however.

Halifax Regional Police say a driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a head-on crash with a snow plow on Larry Uteck Boulevard.

The collision happened at around 6:45 a.m., as the snow was beginning to fall in the city.

Halifax Regional Police say they have received at least 50 reports of vehicle crashes or collisions between 6 a.m. and noon.

Meanwhile, slick roads from falling snow during the morning commute has prompted some Halifax Transit bus routes to operate on a snow plan.
