Ex-Disney boss partners with Canada’s Nelvana on new series

TORONTO – Canada’s Nelvana Studio is partnering with ex-Disney boss Michael Eisner’s Topps Company for a new animated TV series.

Toronto-based Nelvana will produce 26 half-hour episodes of Mysticons, an action series aimed at boys aged 6 to 11.

Nelvana is owned by Corus Entertainment. The Topps Company — a marketer of sports cards and collectibles — is owned by The Tornante Company, which was founded by Eisner.

“We are thrilled to work with Corus Entertainment a globally renowned children’s broadcaster and producer,” said Eisner, the CEO of Disney from 1984 to 2005, in a release. “Nelvana has a strong history of success in building and launching hit boys action properties and the partnership with Topps sets the stage for Mysticons to be the next big global boys action franchise.”

Mysticons  is about a group of friends who discover a powerful and mystical tome that transforms them into warriors capable of battling dragons, dark knights and orcs.

The series will be written by Toronto’s Sean Jara, whose credits include Naturally, Sadie and Hot Wheels: Battle Force 5 and Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Nelvana series include Babar, Franklin and Friends and Scaredy Squirrel.
