Voters approve sports complex

Work will soon start on the construction of a new multi-use sports facility next to the Vernon campus of Okanagan College. Yesterday voters in Vernon and Coldstream voted 52 per cent in favour of the facility in a referendum. The facility includes a regulation-sized track and an artificial playing field that is large enough for a CFL game.

Bill Tarr of Vernon Minor Football says the $7.5 million facility boasts a versatile design that will allow it to be used for football, soccer, rugby, track and field, and many other sports. Akbul Mund, president of the North Okanagan Sports Society, was delighted with the referendum results. “This is great news for the entire community,” he said.

Patrick Nicol, chairperson of the Regional District of North Okanagan, personally supported the project. He believes it will spur economic growth for the entire community.

Construction will probably start this fall. The property is in the ALR and one of the conditions imposed by the Agricultural Land Commission is that the entire project must be completed by November 2014.
