SIU investigating man’s death in OPP presence near Apsley

OPP and the SIU are investigating a man's death on Tuckers Road in North Kawartha Township – Nov 1, 2018

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the death of a man in police presence near the village of Apsley Thursday morning.

According to the SIU, Durham Regional Police received a call around 3:15 a.m. about a possible abduction that had occurred in Oshawa.

Later that morning around 5 a.m., OPP officers from Peterborough County and Bancroft detachments located a vehicle believed to have been involved in the abduction, the SIU stated.

The SIU says officers followed a pickup truck off Highway 28 onto Tuckers Road, about six kilometres north of Apsley (approximately 62 kilometres north of Peterborough).

“As police approached the vehicle, the man sustained grievous injury and was pronounced dead at the scene,” stated OPP Sgt. Jason Folz.

The SIU says officers exited their cruises and exchanged words with a 40-year-old man who was in the vehicle.

“A short time later, as officers approached the vehicle, the man sustained a gunshot wound,” the SIU stated. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A female was also located in the vehicle and taken to hospital for treatment, the SIU said.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the incident. The OPP are not providing any further comment since the SIU has invoked its mandate.

The SIU is tasked with investigating circumstances involving police in Ontario which have resulted in a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving a civilian.
