WINNIPEG – A plane crashed in whiteout conditions on Island Lake on Wednesday afternoon, but the lone occupant escaped with only minor injuries.
Island Lake RCMP were notified an aircraft emergency locator transmitter was activated in the area just after 3 p.m. and they responded with vehicles, snowmobiles and a helicopter.
A commercial 1973 Cessna 207 was found about two miles off the winter road by Mounties on snowmobiles at about 3:30 p.m.
The plane, which operates out of Sandy Lake, Ont., took off from Island Lake and was only in the air for a few minutes before crashing.
The pilot, a 26-year-old man from Red Deer, Alta., was treated at the Garden Hill Nursing Station.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada was notified and police continue to investigate.
