A 55-year-old man from Dartmouth is facing arson charges after a fire on North Street on Monday night.
Officers and Halifax Fire were called to the 5700-block of North Street at 9:25 p.m.

Witnesses tell Global News they saw an orange glow and smelled smoke before the fire alarm went off. A resident says firefighters were there “almost immediately” and residents were able to return home in about two or three hours.

An investigation by Halifax Fire determined the fire was deliberately set. Police soon identified a man they believed was responsible, and arrested the suspect on Jackson Road in Dartmouth by 10:30 p.m.

The man is charged with arson disregard for human life, possession of an incendiary material and breach of recognizance.
He is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court at a later date.
