The Winnipeg Jets say that starting this September, only digital tickets will get you through the doors to hockey games at Bell MTS Place.

True North Sports and Entertainment announced the switch away from paper on Tuesday. The new rules will require ticket holders to have a smartphone, replacing the print-at-home option.

The Jets say the change will make getting through the doors more convenient and eco-friendly.

“More and more people have a smartphone, so the amount of easy-adopters is growing and the amount of people it’ll be an inconvenience for is reducing,” Kevin Donnelly said.

“It’s an evolution.”

Other NHL teams — including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild and Washington Capitals — have already eliminated print-at-home tickets.

True North said on Tuesday they believe it could also help address an ongoing problem.

“Eliminating the ability to print this PDF that [fans could] duplicate reduces the opportunity for fraudulent tickets to be created,” Donnelly said.

If people don’t have access to a smartphone, they will have to visit the Bell MTS Place Box office with a government-issued ID to access their tickets.
