EDMONTON- Fire crews believe an electrical fan is to blame in an early morning blaze at a southeast Edmonton community centre.

The fire broke out at the Leefield Community Centre, located at 79th Street and 36th Avenue, shortly after 6:00 Saturday morning.

Firefighters say a passerby called 911 after seeing flames and smoke coming from the roof of the building.

Fire crews were able to douse the blaze within 20 minutes of arriving on scene. Damage was contained to a washroom and an office inside the building, but firefighters say it could have been a lot worse.

“It was probably burning for about two or three hours,” said Captain Ken Baker with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services. “That’s when we usually get our worst fires- (between) two and four in the morning- when nobody sees them. Thank God that person came by, saw it, and (called) us.”

Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire, and nobody was injured. There is no damage estimate at this time.
