Free dumping at Saskatoon’s landfill

City of Saskatoon to allow free dumping at landfill for residents with bagged garbage, carts for one week starting tomorrow. File / Global News

SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon will be allowing free dumping at the landfill in the upcoming week.

Starting tomorrow and running until April 6, residents who bring bagged garbage or carts in the back of a trailer or truck will be given free admittance.

The move comes after the city faced challenges collecting garbage from back lanes in the past week, with collection in some cases missed for three weeks.

Garbage trucks were getting stuck in snow-drifted lanes last week and now the spring melt is making conditions even worse.

Conditions in many lanes prompted the city to temporarily suspend back lane collection and to switch to front street collection. This will remain in place until the snow melt is over and all lanes are accessible.

The city is also developing specific collection approaches for those areas where front street collection is not possible. Instruction flyers on how the garbage will be picked up will be delivered to those homes the day before collection is scheduled to take place.

Garbage and recycling that was not collected on March 20, 21 or 22 will not be picked up until the next scheduled date.

Weekly pickup of garbage and recycling collection starts again on Monday.
