A 31-year-old man has been charged with a list of offences after a police chase through central Edmonton late last month that left a pedestrian with serious injuries.

The ordeal started at around 12:30 a.m. on July 30. Police said they noticed a Buick Rendezvous in the area of 101 Street and 108 Avenue with a stolen licence plate.

Police said officers in a marked car approached the driver as he exited the vehicle. But when police tried to talk to him, he jumped back in the Buick and drove off.

Police followed the vehicle, which went through a red light on 107 Avenue at 101 Street, officers said in a media release on Friday. As the vehicle continued west along 107 Avenue, it left the vehicle and hit a lamp post, sheering off its base.

Police said the vehicle then struck a pedestrian.

Officers were able to stop the vehicle at 103 Street, but the driver jumped out and fled on foot. Police managed to take the man into custody a short distance away.

The 25-year-old woman who was hit by the vehicle was taken to hospital with multiple and serious injuries.

Tyler James Bjornstad is now charged with flight from a peace officer causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop at an accident causing bodily harm, disqualified driving, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and two counts of breach of recognizance.

The incident is still under investigation.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate the officers’ actions during the police chase.
