Couchiching Beach under swim advisory after elevated bacteria levels recorded

Couchiching Beach in Orillia has been issued a swim advisory because the water has a “higher than normal” bacteria count.

According to a release issued Thursday, the city of Orillia received notice from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) that a swim advisory had been issued.

A swimming advisory is issued by the SMDHU when bacteria levels exceed those considered to be acceptable by the health unit.

While an advisory is not a beach closure, the city recommends that those who choose to swim during an advisory avoid dunking their heads and swallowing the water.

According to the release, when there is a higher than normal bacteria count, there may be an increased risk of developing minor irritations and infections.

Residents are also reminded that during an advisory lifeguards are off-duty.

According to the release, Moose Beach in Orillia also remains under a swim advisory at this time.
