At around 3 p.m. Tuesday, two CBSA officers were attempting to deport a man from Canada. The agency said an altercation ensued on the aircraft prior to take off and the man went into medical distress.

EMS confirmed Wednesday they were called to the airport just after 3 p.m and the man was still on the aircraft when they arrived.

They transported a man in his late 40s to the Peter Lougheed Hospital in critical, life-threatening condition, EMS said.

“This is being investigated as an in-custody death,” said Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm in a news release Thursday. “To protect the integrity of the investigation and prevent any influence on the recollection of witnesses, there is limited information we can share at this time.”

Police said they are speaking to witnesses to help determine what happened before the man died.

The name of the man and what country he is from won’t be released until his next of kin have been notified, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to please call them at 403-266-1234 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers online or 1-800-222-8477.
