EDMONTON – The Air Quality Health Index for Edmonton and communities east of the city remains high Thursday, prompting a precautionary air quality advisory.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) issued the advisory Thursday morning.

AHS says the precautionary air quality advisory for the City of Edmonton and areas east of Edmonton was put in place because of “air quality deterioration associated with a temporary air-inversion event.”

Alberta Environment indicates Edmonton’s maximum Air Quality Health Index for Thursday is 8, which means “high risk.” The forecast for tonight is 7, and Friday is listed as 8.

Wednesday, the City of Edmonton was listed as a 7 on the Air Quality Health Index.

AHS says the current air quality conditions are not expected to cause health concerns in most healthy individuals. People with pre-existing respiratory conditions (such as COPD and asthma) and/or cardiovascular conditions (such as angina, previous heart attack and congestive heart failure) may notice their symptoms worsen.

AHS says people with those conditions should monitor their symptoms, consider adjusting outdoor activities, and take the advice of their doctors if their symptoms get worse.
