Blue-green algae detected along West Harbour shoreline

Blue-green algae is putting in its traditional mid-summer appearance in Hamilton’s West Harbour.

Public Health Services has confirmed the presence of the toxin-producing cyanobacteria at the Bayfront Park Boat Launch and Pier 4 Park beach.

It has also been found at Harbour West Marina, and throughout the marinas on Macassa Bay.

Health experts say contact with blue-green algae should be avoided due to potential health risks, ranging from skin irritation to headaches, fever and abdominal cramps.

Residents are also reminded to keep their pets out of the water in the affected areas.
