Businesses suffering due to southwest Calgary road projects
WATCH: It's already commuter chaos in parts of Calgary's southwest with ongoing construction projects. Now, a long list of added road closures will amplify the frustrations. As Jill Croteau reports, area businesses are already suffering and wonder whether they'll survive to see the end of the road work – Aug 2, 2018

Small business owners in Glenmore Landing are seeing profits plummet. They say customers are avoiding the area because of continuous traffic congestion due to construction.

Parvaneh Vejdani owns Gypsy Rose Florist and is worried about the long-term survival of her business.

“I noticed about 10 to 15 per cent drop since January. It’s about $7,000 to $10,000 a month,” Vejdani said.

Collectively, business owners have been advocating for a break on rent or property taxes. They say there has been sympathy for what they’re enduring but little else.

“When it comes to hearing this year-over-year plummets for business and customer access, we need to bring cash to the table.

“Enough talk and pony up the money and not expect these projects to be delivered on the backs of entrepreneurs,” Farkas said.

The volume of work starting August long weekend is lengthy and will only add to the frustrations.

There’s a long list of closures and lane reductions on Anderson Road, Southland Drive, 14th Street SW as well as 90th Avenue.

Most of these projects aren’t expected to wrap up until the fall of 2019.
