A longtime Winnipeg city councillor known for his passion and advocacy for literacy will have his name live on outside a local library.
The West End Library has officially been renamed the Harvey Smith Library, the City of Winnipeg said Tuesday.
Smith, who died in March of 2017 at the age of 80, had a strong passion for community and libraries.
“Harvey served our community with distinction. He was a community champion who loved our city, especially the ward he represented,” said Coun. Cindy Gilroy, Daniel McIntrye Ward.
“His career as a librarian and then as a city councillor were filled with colour and life.”
Smith served on city council in the ’80s and then again from 1998 to 2014. He also helped to move the former West End Library from Ellice Avenue to its current location at 999 Sargent Ave., attached to the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex.
A portrait of Smith, created by students from Art City, was also unveiled. The painting will be permanently located at the library as a tribute to the former Councillor.
