After almost 50 years, Simcoe Building at Durham College to be demolished

The oldest building at Durham College is coming down.

Demolition has already started on the Simcoe Building, which was built back in 1969.

It was originally meant to be temporary, but has supported students and staff for almost 50 years.

The building will be replaced by the new Centre for Collaborative Education which will open in September.

“From the students’ perspective, the environment inside the classrooms inside the buildings is fine, it works well, and from the college’s perspective we’re obviously not paying as much money to heat and cool the buildings which means we can put those kinds of funds back into college programs, which are important for our students,” said Alan Dunn, Durham College facilities and ancillary services.

The demolition is expected to be a slow process and will be complete by the end of next month.
