The Loyalist Township fire chief says the home is a total loss – Jul 11, 2018

A Morven home on County Road 2 west of Kingston is just a shell after an overnight fire.

Loyalist Township Fire Department responded just before 2 a.m. Wednesday with seven trucks and had tanker support from the nearby Napanee fire department.

Chief Fred Stephenson says the home was fully engulfed when crews arrived on scene.

“Flames through the roof of the garage had already collapsed prior to us getting here.”

Chief Stephenson says it took crews about an hour to contain the blaze.

“Because of the collapsed area, we were about another three hours getting the hot spots and making sure it was fully extinguished.”

Two people live in the home but Stephenson says only one person was in the house at the time of the fire.

“The lone occupant who was home was alerted to the fire by her dog. At least the dog woke the owner up and she got out safe.”

Investigators haven’t determined if the smoke detectors were working.

Stephenson says the fire is not suspicious and estimates damage to the home to be $200,000.

“Because of the advanced condition of the fire, the house is basically a total loss.”

The cause of the fire is still being determined but Stephenson says they believe the fire started at the back of the house.

“We have it ruled down to an area of origin — just don’t know what actually caused it to ignite in that area, so we’re still digging and scraping the floor on the deck area.”

Stephenson says fortunately, the homeowners do have insurance.
