At least two buildings at Dalhousie University have been evacuated, and one person taken to hospital, following a chemical spill Monday.
Emergency crews were called just before 12:30 p.m. to the campus.
A spokesperson with the university confirms the MacDonald building, the Department of Chemistry building and the chemical storage facility have all been evacuated.
“They were transporting product from one room to another,” said Mike Blackburn, a division commander with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency.
Blackburn says none of the people transporting the chemicals was injured, however, one person did slip and fall.
“He was not exposed to the product. He was almost what you call a bystander but he did have a slip and fall accident and was transported to hospital … probably with a headache,” he said.
Blackburn says firefighters are working with a chemist to identify the products properly. He estimates five different chemicals were spilled.
A hazmat team is working on the clean-up efforts and the buildings will remain closed until further notice.
