On Wednesday, just after noon, Environment Canada placed the city under a severe thunderstorm watch. along with Niagara, the Greater Toronto Area and much of southern Ontario.

The agency said weather conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall and warned the public to take precautions.

“Given the high heat and humidity, a few of these thunderstorms could be intense resulting in localized torrential downpours,” the weather agency said.

Some regions could quickly receive 25 to 50 mm of rain, and wind gusts up to 90 km/h could also occur, Environment Canada said.

Hamilton also remains under a heat warning, though temperatures are expected to subside into the mid-20s on Friday.
