Severe thunderstorm surges through Greater Toronto Area

A powerful thunderstorm ran through the Greater Toronto Area Thursday evening producing loud bursts of thunder and significant rainfall.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the GTA, including Durham Region, around noon and said the high heat and humidity, mixed with thunderstorms, could produce intense torrential downpours.

Peel Regional Police said officers were responding to several reports of fallen trees and hydro wires around Mississauga.

The weather service said the storm was expected to be slow moving and some locations could receive between 25 to 50 millimetres of rain over a short period of time.

Officials said some areas could also receive wind gusts of up to 90 km/h which can bring down trees and electrical wires causing power outages.

The public was also being warned that the intense downpours could cause flash flooding in low-lying areas near streams, creeks, and lakes.

Public safety officials reminded residents to take cover if threatening weather approaches.

The hot and humid weather experienced by southern Ontario since Canada Day weekend is expected to dissipate by Friday morning.

A cold front moving into the region will make the days ahead relatively more comfortable until next Monday when temperatures rise yet again.
