Smokers among fans shut out by new re-entry policy at Calgary’s Saddledome

Doctors are calling on Alberta's NHL teams to curb arena capacity Sept. 23, 2021. Global News

Smokers attending events at the Scotiabank Saddledome will have to make alternate plans if they hope to head outside for a quick smoke during events at the ‘Dome.

According to the Saddledome’s website, the new policy came into effect on July 1, prohibiting exit and re-entry for all events, sporting and non-sporting.

Previously, re-entry had been restricted for concerts and other events, except in cases of medical or other emergencies. Now, attendees at Calgary Flames, Calgary Hitmen and Calgary Roughnecks games will not be able to re-enter the arena once they’ve exited.

The Saddledome joins arenas across Canada in restricting re-entry.

The Calgary Flames declined comment, only saying this policy change brings the arena in line with best practices across the NHL.

In September 2016, Edmonton’s Rogers Place was announced as a smoke-free environment before opening its doors. Winnipeg’s Bell MTS Place announced the change to its re-entry policy in May 2017 and Toronto’s Air Canada Centre in September 2017.
