Police use stun gun on bat-wielding man in Vanier arrest

Ottawa police say they used a stun gun to subdue a bat-wielding man who allegedly resisted arrest following a verbal and physical confrontation in Vanier.

Ottawa police say frontline officers found two men fighting in the area of Montreal and Begin roads on Tuesday afternoon. According to police, one of the men had a baseball bat in hand. The men were pushing each other.

Officers approached and asked the man to drop the baseball bat. Police say they also used “de-escalation techniques” to deal with the man.

Yet police say the man with the bat became aggressive toward the officers. He allegedly resisted arrest, and spat blood at the officers while still clinging to the bat, police say.

That’s why police say they used a Taser to subdue than man. Officers eventually handcuffed him without injury.

Police say Guillaume Michaud, 29, of Ottawa, is charged with assault with intent to resist arrest, assaulting a peace officer and possession of a weapon

“This is another example of the great work that our officers do in being proactive and keeping our communities safe,” said Supt. Mark Ford of the frontline directorate.

The other male involved in the dispute was unharmed and not arrested. One officer suffered minor injuries to his leg after allegedly being kicked by the arrested man.
