The Olympus OM-D E-M5 is in a class of its own.Check out this video link on GlobalTV Monday Morning News Tech Talk http://www.globaltvedmonton.com/video/may+28++tech+talk/video.html?v=2240049922&p=2&s=dd#themorningnews/video
Summer is almost here and that means new digital camera
arrivals. We will be looking them as they come out and taking them out for a
test drive.
Olympus is off the gate with two top-notch digital cameras,
the XZ-1 compact and the OM-D E-M5 micro four thirds mirrorless interchangeable
lens model. Both are very different from each other depending on what is
important to you, including price.
The Olympus XZ-1 10
megapixel compact digital camera with 4X optical zoom f1.8-f2.5 is well priced
at $399 for a camera that fits pockets, has twice the sensor size of
traditional point-and-shoot cameras. What stand out is the very fast 4X optical
zoom lens from f1.8 in wide angle and zoomed out at f2.8. That’s almost four
times more light gathering glass and very impressing quality at those wide open
apertures. Like competitive compacts, it is only 10 megapixel but that
combination of fast lens and larger sensor and larger light gathering sensor
cell means less noise at higher ISO and richer colours. With a minimum of
space, this camera delivers. Off course it also features my favourite Olympus Art
filters, a selection of six special effects filters used as you shoot. It
shoots RAW format too.
The overdue Olympus OM-D E-M5 16.1 megapixel with. Zuiko ED 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 EZ zoom
lens, $1,299 is finally here. For that price, it talks the talk and walks the
walk on adrenalin. Every pro feature you would want in a top-tier mirrorless
interchangeable lens camera is here. Impressive minimum shutter lag, solid
feel, dust resistant and splash proof, extended zoom lens, customized shortcuts,
tons of ART filters, many with additional fine tuning and 23 scene selections. Personally, I don’t care for the EZ zoom, intended for smoother HD video shooting but annoying in still photography.

For me, the icing on the cake is the image quality at high
ISO settings, previously an Achilles heel in this kind of camera. Although the
ISO goes up to 25.600, its more down to earth 6400 ISO, amazingly noise free.
Bravo! Combined with a first-time in-body 5-axis sensor image stabilizing shifting
and a noticeably faster autofocus response this camera has carved out its own
category… a micro four thirds mirrorless 9 frames per second camera that outdoes
every previous E series Olympus has made so far, not to mention competition. It has a 1.4M quality electronic viewfinder
with tons of information including level gauge sensors. The touch screen for choosing your focus point, something I used to consider a toy, works is very responsive, making it a useful feature for quickly grabbing selected focus pictures.
The tilting bright and sharp OLED 610,000 dot screen
features generous swing angles, especially for ground level shots. As all
Olympus cameras, it has effective sensor dust removal by vibrating in high
frequencies. Most fittingly, a two mode battery grip is a great accessory for long trips $300. On of my favourite features is a perfectly placed rubber thumb rest for rock steady holding and it keeps your thumb from accidentally pressing other buttons. Nice! The video is better than most, producing up to an impressive 20 Mbps quality 1920×1080 59.94 fps movie with no zoom or focus noise from the kit lens.
This camera, designed for quality and rugedness is some piece of work.
