Black smoke was shooting into the air Monday afternoon as a fire burned at a business on King Street at Sutherland.

Emergency crews were on scene at Orloff Metals Ltd.

District fire chief Barry Carpenter said the building was evacuated as a precaution.

Officials believe a junk pile ignited as an operator was moving it, however, the cause is still under investigation.

“He was moving the pile around with a grapple hoe and it may have self-ignited through a spark,” Carpenter said.

Policed arrived on scene first and alerted fire crews. Three pumper trucks and an aerial truck attended.

There were no injuries.
