A fire destroyed the Alonsa Hotel overnight. RCMP handout

WINNIPEG – A spectacular fire burned the Alonsa Hotel to the ground overnight.

Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP and local fire departments were called to the fire shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Thick smoke was seen coming from the hotel when emergency crews arrived, but efforts to save the building were unsuccessful and it was completely destroyed.

The building was evacuated when people inside smelled smoke, RCMP were told, and no injuries have been reported.

Officials continue to investigate. The cause of the fire and a damage estimate are not available, but the hotel is a total loss, police said.

Alonsa is 165 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg near the western shore of Lake Manitoba.
