Plateau-Mont-Royal moves forward with controversial parking ban

The Plateau-Mont-Royal is moving forward with a controversial plan to restrict the creation of new parking spots in the area.

The bylaw, which seeks to prevent drivers from making new parking spots in their backyards and alleyways, will be implemented in 498 out of 505 zones in the borough.

The borough announced Thursday that the remaining seven zones, where more than enough residents opposing the bylaw signed a registry to force a referendum, will not be subject to the parking rules.

“The public discussion around this new bylaw is healthy, we are pleased that it has taken place, and we are keeping our word today by recognizing the voices of a number of people who have opposed it,” said borough mayor Luc Ferrandez in a statement.

The borough unveiled the plan in early March in hopes of prioritizing public transit, limiting traffic in alleyways and eliminating residents’ dependence on cars.

Ferrandez said the results of the registry show that residents are largely in favour of restricting the creation of new parking spots on private property.

“We had confirmation today, once again, that we have the support of a vast majority of citizens,” said Ferrandez.

As part of the plan, borough officials are also looking at increasing the amount of street parking reserved for residents in the Plateau.

While the bylaw will be implemented across most of the Plateau, some residents argued the rules aren’t entirely clear.

Hélène Langlois told Global News in May she opposed to the parking restrictions, saying there was a lack of information about the project from the borough.

“They say it’s for the greater good, but they don’t listen to people who are concerned, who don’t want this bylaw to go through,” she said.
