Keeping You Online: March 11, 2012

It was posted on March 5th to You tube.  By Sunday it had more than 71 million hits and sparked a reaction not seen by social media that I can remember.  The Kony 2012 video by the Invisible Children group aimed to raise awareness (and funds) to fight Ugandan warlord Jospeh Kony.

However as soon as it went viral so did some unflattering things about the group that posted it.  A tumblr account disputing the Invisible Children organization led to a social media debate erupting with many accusations going back and forth.

The power of going viral is not always a good thing as two teens from Calgary found out.   A simple tweet about a high school house party with the hashtag #projectkris led to it trending in Canada and being talked about as far away as Australia and Japan.  Project Kris was a take on the popular movie Project X which is about a house party that gets out of control.  Police stepped in and told the kids the party would be monitored closely.  In the end the guys decided to have it a Calgary nightclub.

The big news coming up this week is the release of the newest iPad.  Apple confirmed the new tablet, with a sharper screen and faster processor will go on sale in Canada and the U.S. Friday.

The cash mob came to Edmonton this weekend.  Cash mobs descend on a local business to spend money.  It is a big boost to the small independent businesses.

Dating apps are becoming quite popular but there is a danger involved when it comes to revealing too much about yourself.
