School bus involved in highway accident near Enderby

One person airlifted from scene of crash involving school bus in North Okanagan – Jun 14, 2018

Police are investigating a serious crash south of Enderby that closed Highway 97A for almost six hours Wednesday.

The crash involved four vehicles, according to RCMP.  An SUV appears to have been struck by a pickup truck and was then pushed into the back of the school bus. The pickup then careened into a nearby utility pole.

At the scene, Sgt. Justin Thiessen told Global News three people were taken to hospital following the crash and that all are expected to survive their injuries.

But a release on the crash stated one person was air-lifted to hospital and their condition is unknown.

“The school bus had stopped to let the last passenger off for the day, when the collision occurred,” Cst. Kelly Brett, spokesperson for the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP said in the release. “The bus driver was attentive and could see that a collision was about to occur just as the child was about to un-load, however held the child back just prior to the collision occurring.

It’s not known what caused the crash. Traffic is moving around the area at Stepney Cross Road and Fortune for passenger vehicles.

DriveBC said the highway reopened at 9:45 p.m.
