While the official start of wildfire season in Alberta was on March 1, a long winter meant the province saw little in the way of fire activity until late April.
With summer nearing its end, officials are continuing to warn Albertans about the risk of new fires starting.
Between March 1, 2018 and Aug. 29, 2018, Alberta recorded 1,157 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area. In that time, just over 58,521 hectares of forested land had burned.
As of 10 a.m. on Aug. 29, 2018, there were 15 wildfires burning throughout Alberta — down from 25 burning on Aug. 13. Of those fires, zero were out of control, five were being held, seven were under control and three had been turned over.
As of 10 a.m. on Aug. 29, 2018, there were 18 fire advisories in place across the province.
