Kingston man determined to steal car despite being caught, police say

A Kingston man was arrested after allegedly breaking into a parked car and staying there until police arrived.

According to police, on April 15 around 6 p.m., a woman parked her 2016 Subaru Crosstrek on the 100-block of Compton Street. Twenty minutes later, she returned to her vehicle and as she began placing items in the back seat, she discovered an unknown male sitting in the driver seat. The complainant backed away from the vehicle and called 911.

At one point, police say that the man allegedly trying to steal the car told the woman he was looking for his keys, perhaps trying to pretend as if the car he was stealing was his own.

When police arrived they found the 34-year-old accused still sitting in the vehicle. Officers discovered the accused had broken a window to gain access and damaged the steering column in an effort to start the vehicle.

Despite the man’s strange behaviour, police say that there was no indication that he was on drugs. He simply showed an extreme determination to steal that car, according to police communications officer Cam Mack.

The accused was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was held to attend a bail hearing the following day.
