Calgarians won’t be seeing street sweepers out any time soon thanks to the unusually cold spring.

The City of Calgary announced Monday that the annual residential Spring Clean-up program which normally starts in early April is being delayed.

Street sweeping can’t start until the snow and ice melts, the city said in a news release Monday.

“Due to the unprecedented nature of this year’s winter, we adjusted our sweeping schedules to ensure our operation can complete this work efficiently and effectively,” said Bill Biensch, roads maintenance manager with the City of Calgary.”Once gutters are free of ice we will be able to begin sweeping in residential areas.”

The online schedule of residential street sweeping dates won’t be posted until the weather gets warmer.

Street sweeping on major roads that are free of snow could also be postponed because crews can’t use water without it freezing.

“Crews will be doing some pre-sweeping in areas where they are able. But, unfortunately, the lower temperatures right now limit our ability to wet the roadway for sweeping,” says Biensch. “When the temperature stabilizes, we are prepared to start our sweeping program as normal.”

Updates will be made in the coming weeks.
