A month and a half after a crash that resulted in the death of 13-year-old Avery Kernaghan, her father has died in hospital.
Emergency crews were called to the scene of the two-vehicle collision along Glendon Drive west of Parkhouse Drive just after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10. Avery Kernaghan was pronounced dead in hospital soon afterwards while Doug Kernaghan, 47, was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
The lone occupant of the other vehicle was not injured.
The crash occurred on the same day Avery Kernaghan was competing at the provincial skating championships. She and her father left during a food and rest break but failed to return on time. Avery’s mother and coach, Chrissy Kernaghan, received a phone call about the crash soon afterwards.
The news of Doug Kernaghan’s passing was posted on a GoFundMe page set up for the family on Tuesday.
“It is with a very heavy heart that we inform you that early Tuesday, March 27, Doug Kernaghan passed away peacefully, with Chrissy by his side,” the update read.
“Our hearts are broken. And we continue to pray for Chrissy and Matthew at this time.”
The crash remains under investigation.
