Okanagan apples finally hit the shelves

The province is helping promote two Okanagan developed apple varieties that have been held back by shipping issues for three decades.

The Okanagan Plant Improvement Corporation has been given $25,000 to promote two apple varieties: the Aurora Golden Gala apple, a yellow apple said to have a long shelf life, and the Salish apple, which is pink-red.

The apples were created 30 years ago but bruising issues blocked them from packing houses around the valley since they did not make good bin apples. Now the apples will both be packed and shipped to stores in special cartons.

The apples are crosses between the Splendour and Gala apples and were created in 1981 at the Summerland Research Station.
