Removal of partially submerged truck is delayed

The Imperial Road bridge collapsed on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018. Elgin County OPP

A truck that’s been partially submerged in water since a bridge collapsed in Port Bruce last month will have to wait at least another day before being removed.

Central Elgin mayor David Marr says the plan was to remove it Tuesday but it hit a snag.

“The Ministry of Labour requested a detailed plan on the removal of the truck and require that before they can actually move it,” he explained.

“We’re hoping the plan is prepared today and that the ministry will approve that and then they can move forward tomorrow.”

On Monday, crews began preparing to remove the truck, with a crane and tow truck on site.

“The tow truck anchored the disabled truck just to make sure it wouldn’t move. The crane itself was lowering a cement bucket into the dump box of the truck and they were shovelling the gravel or aggregate that was in the back into the bucket. That took them pretty well all day to do that.”

The Imperial Road bridge collapsed in late February.

A temporary replacement bridge should be installed in time for the summer season.
