Peterborough Transit receives $56M boost in government funding

Peterborough-Kawartha MP Maryam Monsef says transit matters to Peterborough residents and that the partnership will improve the economic and environmental sustainability for residents.

Monsef noted at a recent Rural Women’s Summit in Buckhorn, about 30 kilometres north of Peterborough, transportation was the “number one barrier and opportunity for social and economic growth” for rural communities.

“Knowing that the City and County of Peterborough will receive over $31 million in federal public transit funding will enable us to prioritize key transportation projects to grow our economy while protecting the environment,” said Monsef.

Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal says the funding will help support thriving communities and ensure a high quality of life.

“I am pleased that through our investment of over $25 million in provincial funding, our community can prioritize investments in transit infrastructure to keep our community moving, protect the environment and boost our local economy,” he stated.

“As a former city councillor in Peterborough, I have always believed that investments in transit build a complete community.”

• The City of Kawartha Lakes ($946,802 federal; $781,112 provincial)
• Cobourg ($1,007,021 federal; $830,793 provincial)
• Port Hope ($567,123 federal; $467,877 provincial)
• Trent Hills ($36,349 federal; $29,988 provincial).

“Efficient and sustainable public transit is key to the success of our communities, and plays a pivotal role in our environmental stewardship,” said Northumberland-Peterborough South MP Kim Rudd.
