One metre of snow and counting; Calgary hit by another blast of winter

WATCH: A snowfall warning remained in effect for Calgary Thursday evening as poor weather conditions led to reduced visibility and blowing snow on the roadways. Christa Dao explains – Mar 15, 2018

Calgarians have had a significant amount of snow so far this winter, with over 104 centimetres officially recorded at Environment Canada’s weather office since Dec. 20, 2017. Because of the variables attached to the weather systems that have hit this year, many parts of the city have had much more snow than that.

But it is not over yet.

Another blast of winter has entered southern Alberta prompting freezing rain and snowfall warnings for areas along the U.S border, right through to north of Red Deer.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for much of southern Alberta Wednesday night in advance of a winter weather system that was forecasting up to 15 centimetres of snow Thursday, with a second system expected to hit Saturday that could bring another five to ten centimetres.

This comes on the heels of over 60 centimetres of snow from Feb. 1, 2018 to March 3, 2018. To make matters worse for Calgarians, on the same date last year it was 14.5 C.

The big story on March 24, 2017 was that golf courses were opening early.

Typically, March is the snowiest month of the year for Calgary, with just under 23 centimetres of snow, and April is the second snowiest month with just under 19 centimetres.

In 2018, there was nearly triple the average monthly snowfall in February, and March kicked off with the snowiest start on record.

According to Environment Canada, when you look at the water equivalent measurements, there has not been a winter this wet in 46 years.
