It will be a messy couple of days in Calgary.
Environment Canada (EC) issued a snowfall warning at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, warning of rain, freezing rain and snow for Thursday and Friday.
The freezing rain warning ended at around 9:36 a.m. Thursday, but the snowfall warning continues.
The agency said 10 to 20 centimetres is expected across a large portion of southern Alberta, beginning Thursday morning and tapering off by evening, before ending completely Friday morning.
The highest amounts of snow are expected along the foothills west of Red Deer to Milk River, including the cities of Red Deer, Calgary and Lethbridge. Some localized amounts of 20 centimetres can also be expected.
Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times due to heavy snow.
“It is likely that travel will be impacted along portions of the Trans-Canada Highway and the QE2 Highway,” EC said in a news release earlier on Wednesday.
Thursday afternoon, RCMP in Cochrane issued a release warning of poor weather and road conditions, especially on the Cochrane hill along Highway 1A. Roads remained open but police cautioned motorists to drive slowly.
RCMP said the roads are slippery and traffic is slow moving.
RCMP also reported icy conditions on Highway 2 south of Nanton around 9:18 a.m. Thursday.
Roads are expected to be rough Thursday and into the weekend, and the weather is also expected to cause some issues with air travel. Air Canada and WestJet have issued travel warnings for Calgary.
