TORONTO – Two people have been arrested on charges of large caches of assault weapons, thousands of rounds of ammunition and a 32-inch long cannon in Bancroft, Ontario.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) announced the arrests at a press conference Tuesday morning. Police also showcased the array of weapons on tables guarded by two armed police officers.
On March 7 police raided a home on Spooks Bay Lane in Bancroft and found a large cache of illegal weapons and ammunitions hidden inside the walls.
“There’s no possible reason why anybody would have such an arsenal of weapons,” Durham Regional Police Insp. Mario Lessard said.

Outside of the home police found and seized machining equipment, more illegal, converted and altered weapons, silencers, prohibited ammunitions, homemade weapons and guns that had their serial number removed.
Police have charged 55-year-old David Alan Kift with numerous counts of weapons-related offences.
He retired from the RCMP in 1996 and has been banned from owning weapons since 2008.
Fifty-three-year-old Marion Kift has also been arrested on similar charges.
In total, police seized 67 illegal weapons including machine guns, tasers, crossbows, shotguns and a cannon.
The Department of National Defence was also called to Bancroft to remove land mines, grenades and other explosives discovered by police.
