Saskatoon city administration wants councillors to approve updates to the city’s parking bylaws.
A report heading to the transportation committee on Monday says amendments need to be made for the enforcement of street maintenance parking bans.
According to the report, justices of the peace are interpreting the bylaw as requiring both free-standing sandwich board signs and paper signs to be posted.
Administration says due to this interpretation enforcement of the bylaw has been difficult.
They are asking the bylaw be updated to include the definitions of sandwich board and sign, and the rules for the posting of signs be clarified.
Administration is also recommending changes to the way unrestricted parking permits are displayed.
The report states the current bylaw cannot be complied with as it requires the City’s portion of the permit to be hung from the rear-view mirror and the Saskatchewan Abilities Council placard to be placed on the dashboard.
While customer service staff are advising permit holders to place the City’s hologram sticker on the placard, it is not part of the bylaw and Administration would like it updated to reflect the advice given by staff.
Administration also wants the bylaw updated to clarify that only vehicles designed to carry disabled persons will be permitted to use loading zones.
The changes would go into effect on April 1 if approved by Saskatoon city council.
