Police officers in North Reading, Mass., recently teamed up with local firefighters to save a choking St. Bernard puppy.

The incident, which was captured on surveillance video, began when Megan Vitale ran into the police station in search of help.

Her friend is seen holding her nine-week-old St. Bernard puppy Bodhi, who is choking on some food.

Officers Jorge Hernandez, Peter DiPietro and Joseph Aleo can be seen coming out to lend a hand, and when they arrive, they find Bodhi not breathing, limp and unresponsive.

With some assistance from the firefighters, the officers apply administered back blows and chest compressions in order to dislodge the food.

Bodhi was ultimately revived before the firefighters gave the pooch some extra oxygen.

“Ultimately, a life was saved thanks to rescuers falling back on their training and remaining calm. Even though we are not faced with this kind of incident every day, the officers reacted just as they would in any emergency situation,” Police Chief Michael P. Murphy said in a press release. “We are hopeful that the puppy will make a full recovery.”

The entire incident lasted for over 10 minutes.

“Many of our firefighters have pets at home in their own families. We do not get to choose the emergency situation that comes our way, so it is important that first responders be prepared for anything,” Fire Chief Don Stats said.
