Calgary police are looking to identify suspects after four separate attempted arson incidents at a Calgary school.

The incidents happened outside of regular school hours and on weekends at St. Isabella Elementary Junior High School on Copperfield Boulevard S.E., Calgary police said in a release Monday.

The first incident happened on Feb. 7, when four male youths were seen trying to light arrows on fire and shoot them at the school at about 5:45 p.m.

Police were again called to the school on Feb. 12 at about 3:30 p.m. after someone saw what appeared to be evidence of another arson attempt. Police don’t know when that attempt may have taken place.

Then, on Feb. 23, police were called a fourth time after a witness reported seeing two male youths flee from the school after hearing glass break. The witness put out a small fire at the back of the school before calling police.

Investigators believe the four incidents are connected, and say in the last three the suspects made and used Molotov cocktails.

Police are also investigating whether a fifth attempted arson, at the separate McKenzie Lake School on McKenzie Lake Way S.E. on Feb. 18, is also connected. In that instance, witnesses reported seeing four youths flee from the school grounds in a four-door sedan at about 9:55 p.m.

The suspects have been described by witnesses as male youths wearing dark hoodies.

School officials are working with police to try to identify potential suspects as well as ensure the safety of staff and students at both schools.

“This is a concerning situation that is putting people at risk,” Staff Sgt. Scott McCann said.

“Many different groups host extracurricular activities on school property outside of regular school hours.”

Despite collecting extensive CCTV footage, detectives haven’t been able to identify any suspects. Police are asking any businesses or citizens in the area that have CCTV that hasn’t already been given to police to contact investigators.

Anyone with information on the arsons or about the people involved is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or to contact Crime Stoppers.

“It is very likely that somebody knows something,” McCann said.
