Garbage can fire closes University of Calgary building, sparks arson investigation

A fire in a men’s washroom at the University of Calgary’s math science building on Thursday closed the building and sparked an extensive police and fire investigation.

According to the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), crews were called to the building before 11 a.m for reports of a garbage fire.

By the time firefighters arrived, campus security had extinguished the fire.

Calgary police were also called to the scene and due to the nature of the fire, the arson unit is investigating.

Members of the CFD fire accelerant team were also called and an arson dog searched the building.

All classes that were scheduled in the math science building were cancelled for the day, according to a statement from the university.

It’s expected the building will re-open at 7 a.m. on Friday.
