The wait is almost over for Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors, a Toronto exhibition that’s generated plenty of buzz and a frenzied demand for tickets.
The show opens on Saturday at the Art Gallery of Ontario. It features decades of Kusama’s work and includes sculptures, installations, paintings and drawings. Her famous kaleidoscopic, selfie-friendly mirror rooms are the focus.
The exhibition “looks at the evolution of her immersive, multi-reflective installations created over more than five decades,” Adelina Vlas, associate curator of contemporary art at the AGO, told the Kelly Cutrara show on 640 Toronto Wednesday.
“She’s been…putting art out there in the world for a long time and has been very influential,” Vlas said.
It’s the first Canadian exhibition for the 88-year-old Japanese contemporary artist. It’s also the first time in over 20 years that Kusama has had a major retrospective in North America, according to Vlas.
Those factors, Vlas said, help explain why the show has generated such widespread interest.
The AGO said 110,000 tickets have been snapped up as of Wednesday — 50,000 were sold to the public and the remainder went to its members. The current capacity is 120,000 tickets.
A new block goes on sale online on Tuesday at 10 a.m. on the AGO’s website. The show runs for three months until May 27.
