Canadian cooking appliance company Instant Pot is asking customers to stop using a certain multicooker model after a “small number of reports” the product is overheating and melting.
Instant Pot announced last week the company had received reports some of the Gem 65 8-in-1 multicooker models were malfunctioning, resulting in some units overheating causing “localized melting damage to the underside of the product.”
“We believe the problem only affects batchcodes 1728, 1730, 1731, 1734, and 1746,” the company announced on its Facebook page.

Owners of the Gem 65 8-in-1 cooker can verify the unit’s batchcode by locating a four-digit product code on the label underneath the product.
“We want you to know that we take any problem with our products extremely seriously as safety and quality are our primary concern, and we are working cooperatively with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,” the company said.
Instant Pot has not issued a recall for the slow cooker model, but is asking customers to discontinue use of the units.
“We anticipate providing updated information and next steps regarding receiving a replacement Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker within the next few weeks,” the company said. “In the meantime, we are asking all our customers with a Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker from batchcodes 1728, 1730, 1731, 1734, and 1746 to immediately stop use of the product.”

Global News reached out to Instant Pot to inquire about the number of affected products sold in Canada and if a recall would be issued, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
Founded in 2009, Instant Pot products have soared in popularity. Late last year, an Instant Pot electric pressure cooker was the most-sold item in Canada on Amazon Prime Day.
Instant Pot products are sold in a number of retail stores across Canada including, Best Buy, Loblaws, Walmart, Hudson’s Bay and Canadian Tire.
